Kid Writing

We wanted to write a brief note to explain a classroom program that we will be implementing this year called Kid Writing. You may hear this term often from your child because it quickly becomes a favorite time in our schedule for many students. This program is designed to introduce children to the world of written language through journal writing in a writing workshop format. The writing workshop format is a learning structure in which teachers and students follow the same basic steps each day. First, a child draws a picture and tells a story about it to the teacher, aide, or parent helper. Second, the child writes the story, receiving help to stretch out words. Third, the adult praises the child's accurate spelling and underwrites the rest of the story in conventional spelling. Finally, the teacher teaches mini-lessons to the class based on areas of need that appear in student writing that day. It will be great fun this year to watch as our kindergartners blossom as writers.
